NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams on SecuraFone & Distracted Driving

View Video

May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, but despite driver’s education classes and family rules, statistics show that teen’s inexperience makes them the most likely drivers on the road to be in a car accident. Yesterday, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams reported on the issue of teens and distracted driving and highlighted a new app that can help parents monitor their children’s driving habits called SecuraFone.

Adding to the dangers of inexperience, according to a new PEW Internet study, 31% of teens ages 14-17 now own a smartphone. SecuraFone can help parents monitor how fast their teens are driving and where they are going while blocking them from being able to text, Facebook, Tweet or otherwise let their smartphones distract them while driving.

A powerful family safety solution, SecuraFone can text parents if their child is driving on roads they are not allowed to be on, speeding, and the app can keep teens from using their phone while driving. SecuraFone uses the GPS on a smartphone to detect when a teen is moving over 5 mph. The app then locks the phone screen until the teen is finished driving.

Additionally, parents can set up SecuraFences or virtual borders for their child’s phone. Borders can be set up around certain neighborhoods or cities to stop teens from driving on the highway or certain roads without their parent’s knowledge and permission. Parents can also preset speed alerts. If teens cross a SecuraFence or drive faster than a set limit, parents will be alerted by text message and/or email.

SecuraFone is currently available for iPhone(R) and Android(R) phones and is available in a free basic version with the option to upgrade for additional features with an $8.99 monthly fee. SecuraFone can be downloaded by visiting the SecuraFone website or through your mobile device’s app store. A SecuraFone application is also being developed for Blackberry(R) and Windows(R) Mobile devices. For more information please visit www.securafone.com .

CBS 5 in Phoenix, Arizona on SecuraFone Safety App

ANTHEM, AZ (CBS5/AP) - It’s the latest high-tech way to keep track of your kids. A new smart phone app is giving parents some extra peace of mind this Halloween.

Valley mom Tracy Begalke has three children. Finn, 4, will roam their Anthem neighborhood with his parents by his side, but the two older children will likely wonder off on their own, Begalke said. “I usually tell them what streets they can’t go past, but there’s no way of really knowing how far they go,” said Begalke. The Valley mom just discovered the new app for her smart phone that will allow Begalke to instantly see where her kids are at all times.

It’s called SecuraFone. It is basically a GPS device that can be linked to any child’s cell phone and will send mom, dad or anyone else a text or email alert every few minutes giving them the exact location of their adventurous trick-or-treater. “I like being able to keep track of them without having to bother them and nag them,” said Begalke. “If I can designate an area and their phone is keeping track of them, it’s much easier.”

Ashley Bergeron is a registered nurse at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. She said that you can never take too many precautions when it comes to kids safety, especially on Halloween. “Kids are curious. They might tell you they’re going to one spot and they’re going to be somewhere else,” said Begeron. “I think with this type of technology, that’s what its in place for so we do know where are children are.”

The SecuraFone app will also let children make an emergency call with a quick press of a button. Most safety experts still recommend parents follow their kids on Halloween, but for those older trick or treaters who are too big for mom and dad to tag along the kid tracker app could be just what parents are looking for.

The SecuraFone app is free, but there is also a premium version.

CBS Denver on SecuraFone App to Keep Children Safe

4 On Your Side Money Saver Suzanne McCarroll

DENVER (CBS4) – A major concern for parents each Halloween is safety, especially when children are trick-or-treating after dark. Now there’s a new way to keep track of children.

For many children Halloween is a favorite time of year, but no matter how fun the costumes are, and how responsible the children are, parents worry. That’s why Chris Holbert developed SecuraFone, a free app to help keep children safe.

“The free version will load and instantly allow them to see where the child is at any point in time from their phone or any connected device,” Holbert said. The app also allows children to make an emergency call to their parents with a quick swipe.

“It will send a text message and an email alert to as many people as you want. So it can be their friends, their parents, or older brother, or whoever it is; and they will see exactly where they are,” Holbert said.

Parents and nannies all say it’s so easy to look away for a moment and realize a child is suddenly out of sight. “I think it’s a really good idea for their safety and for the parents’ peace of mind,” a woman said. The app is one way to help know exactly what haunted house children may be visiting. There are additional apps with additional features that will cost money.

CW33 in Dallas - 911 Dispatch Struggles to Locate Cell Phone Callers

By Doug Magditch

View Video

ARLINGTON, Texas —

If you’re calling 911, you’re probably not having the best day. There’s a good chance you won’t be thinking clearly.

So, help yourself now, before you need help.

“Most of our calls, we have no idea where they are calling from,” said Sha Curtis, Arlington Interim Communications Manager.

Our vision’s been clouded by television dramas. Once upon a time, dispatchers knew where you were calling from. That was back in the days of the landline. Now, the line’s been cut.

“They believe, just based on television, that their address is just automatically populated when they deal 911. That’s not the case,” said Curtis.

In Arlington, 78% of calls to dispactch come from cell phones. When a cell phone call comes in, the system estimates the caller’s location. That estimation could be within a few meters or a few miles.

“What we get is an estimated number of meters that we use to convert. It’s never an address. So, we have to work to get the address,” said Curtis.

If you hang up without giving a location, dispatch has to track you down. First the dispatcher will call you back. If there’s no response, he/she will call you cellular provider. That could result in an address, but not necessarily where you called from.

A new smartphone app, Securafone, may help. You can program in phone numbers and email addresses for emergency contacts, like friends and family members. You can also program in 911 as a emergency call number. So, if you’re stranded, you can call all of your emergency contacts at once.

Whoever you put in as a contact will get an alert, along with a GPS location of where the alert came from. They’ll know exactly where you are and where you’re going.

Only problem is, dispatch won’t get the GPS location, but whoever does can call in to assist the dispatcher.

“It goes to a Google map and it shows exactly where it was. Now, he has an option whether he should call her directly and ask her to verify if she’s having an emergency or he can go right to Arlington PD and say, ‘my sister just sent me an alert and she’s on main and first,’” explained Robert Tomlinson, Director of Sales for Securatrac.

While the system isn’t fool-proof, in an emergency, every little bit can help.

WLTX - An App Every Parent Should Have

By Derry London

Columbia, SC (WLTX) — It’s the fear of every parent of a teenager: they hit the road, cell phone in hand. Those two together never mix well.

There’s a free application for Android phones called SecuraFone®.

This app, designed for teenagers, allows parents to set up SecuraFences and receive a text alert any time their child crosses a virtual boundary.

With one press of a button, an SOS feature also automatically places a call to a predetermined emergency contact and alerts other emergency contacts via text or email.

For teens with wheels, SecuraFone can temporarily lock down the email and text messaging functions on a smartphone when the device is traveling at a high speed.

The app can also send an alert if a preset speed threshold is passed.

All settings can be tweaked through a password-protected online account.
