New Service Keeps Families Together at the Alaska State Fair

KTUU NBC Channel 2 in Anchorage, Alaska — By Jackie Bartz

Thousands flock to the Alaska State Fair every year, making it easy for a kid to get lost in all the commotion.

Finding a kid at the fair, can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. The hustle and bustle of crowds get in your way and there’s plenty to keep your kid distracted. but this year there’s a company that wants to give parents peace of mind.

Secura Trac offers GPS locators for kids.

There are three ways to use the locator. If the kid gets lost, parents can use their smart phone to pull up a map with the kid’s location or call the customer service booth to have Secura Trac track them down.

Children can also let their parents know where they are if they get separated or scared. They can press a button and the GPS locator sends a text and email to the parent’s phone.

Finally, if the kid wanders outside the fair for any reason, a text and email is automatically sent to the parents.

“We’re really happy with it and the stress of taking them to a crowded place is a little bit more alleviated for them. Hope we don’t have to use it,” said fair visitor Helena Maloney.

“Good parenting just isn’t enough sometimes. There’s so many people and there’s so many attractions that children get mesmerized by and sometimes you’ll be reading a menu and you turn a little to the left, they turn a little to the right and there’s five people in front of you now,” said Secura Trac CEO Chris Holbert.

The rental fee is $9.99 per day. Secura Trac is located right inside the red gate.

The locator system isn’t just for kids; you can use it on elder people and pets too.

Omaha World Herald - Fair Gadget Great for Roving Kids

By Andrew Nelson

DES MOINES — Parents at the Iowa State Fair this year have something more than a watchful eye and a tight grip available to keep their children close at hand.

It’s SecuraPAL, a “personal automated locator” that looks like an MP3 player. Tucked into a child’s pocket, it can alert parents or authorities to the child’s location if he or she goes missing. SecuraTrac, a company based in the Los Angeles area, is renting SecuraPAL devices at the fair for $9.99 per day.

What SecuraTrac is really dealing in, said company CEO Chris Holbert, is “peace of mind” — something that allows parents to relax a bit more at the bustling fair.

SecuraPAL works like this: A child who gets lost or separated from parents presses a button on the device, which alerts the parents via cell phone to the child’s location using global positioning system satellites and mobile phone networks.

“Once they push that button, everybody who is on the account will get a text message or an e-mail or both,” Holbert said.

A parent who realizes that a child is missing can call SecuraTrac and provide a code, and SecuraTrac will provide the child’s location. The code ensures that the information is released to the right person.

If a child leaves the fairgrounds, an alert stating location and direction of travel is sent to the parents and to SecuraTrac.

Holbert said he rented about a half-dozen devices each of the first four days of the fair. He said he expects business to pick up once more people become familiar with the devices and where to get them at the fair.

“Everyone has had a great experience so far,” he said. “It’s been well-received, and it’s been working great.”

Various companies sell similar devices — some embed the GPS locator in a child’s watch. But Holbert saw an untapped market in state fairs, and he is selling his services at several this year.

Those wanting to rent a SecuraPAL at the Iowa State Fair should go to the Des Moines Register Service Center on the Grand Concourse across from the Grandstand.

ParentDish - Iowa State Fair Offers Parents Tracking Device for Kids

By Amy Hatch

If you’ve always wanted to go to the Iowa State Fair, but were afraid you might lose track of your kid amid the crowd, you can rest easy now. Fair organizers are offering parents a device that will help moms and dads keep close tabs on their children while they’re on the midway.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the device, called SecuraPal, is small enough to fit in a child’s pocket or on a belt loop. If children get lost, all they have to do is press a button to send a text message that sends their location to their parents’ mobile phones. And, if that isn’t enough security for you, just bring your smart phone along — users of those devices can also set the SecuraPal to locate their wandering offspring using GPS.

But that’s not all it’s good for: If Grandma has a tendency to go AWOL, you can get one for her, too. Fair spokeswoman Lori Chappell tells the Tribune that the device would be a convenient way to keep track of elderly guests.

The SecuraPal will run parents $10 a pop. The ability to engage in helicopter parenting while also taking in a life-size sculpture of a cow made entirely out of butter?

Priceless.

1380 AM in Western Iowa - Iowa State Fair to Feature High-tech Kid-finding Gizmo

Iowa State Fair to feature high-tech kid-finding gizmo

Parents will be able to use a new gadget at the Iowa State Fair next month that’s designed to help them keep closer tabs on their kids at the large, crowded venue. Chris Holbert is the inventor and CEO of what’s known as SecuraPAL — PAL for personal automated locator — and it’ll rent for just under ten bucks a day.

“It gets its location from the satellite systems and relays that location to parents or other caretakers, or in the case of the Iowa State Fair, to a group like SecuraTrac,” Holbert says. “If a child goes missing, we know exactly where they are and we can find them quickly.”

The small device can be placed in the child’s pocket, strapped onto an ankle or arm, or laced into a shoe. “There’s also a little panic or SOS button on the device that if the child is scared or lost, they can push,” Holbert says. “In about five to ten seconds, our network will be notified of their location and that they’re missing or they’re scared and we’ll go and find them quickly.”

If the parent becomes separated from the child or just wants to check on the kid’s location, he says it’s a fast, easy process using the parent’s existing cellular phone.

“If they have a web-based phone that can get to the Internet, then they can actually see on the screen a map of the fair and a little dot of where their child would be,” Holbert says. “Or, if they have text or email capability on their phone, they’ll get a read-out, an email or a text, that will say this is where your child is.”

The device can also be set so the parent is notified if the child enters or leaves certain areas, for example, if they leave the fairgrounds. The Iowa State Fair runs August 12-22. It will mark the first time the California-based SecuraTrac will be renting the devices at an event in Iowa.

SecuraTrac Shares Important Back-to-School Child Safety Tips

Lessons to teach your kids and what to do yourself should your child ever go missing

HERMOSA BEACH, CA – Every 40 seconds someone’s son or daughter is reported missing, totaling over 800,000 missing children in the United States each year. Whether you are in a crowded shopping mall, amusement park or even a neighborhood park, as a parent, turning around and not seeing your child induces instant panic and a sinking feeling in your stomach.

There are a few steps parents can take to help shorten the time it takes to locate their child should he or she ever go missing. The first step is to remain as calm as possible and other tips that can help include:

  • Teach your children to look for other moms or dads to ask for help if they ever get separated from you.
  • Practice memorizing last name, address, home phone and cell phone numbers with your children by turning them into a rhyme or pneumonic device so the child can recall it when they are scared.
  • Check around your home in places that would be easy to hide or places where young children might get trapped.
  • Keep a current photograph on hand.
  • Notify local law enforcement and the media and report where they were last seen, what they were wearing and other key pieces of identifying information.
  • Contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) on their toll-free telephone number: 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
  • Consider renting or purchasing a GPS locator for your child that can notify you if you child leaves home and allows them to send you an SOS message if they are in danger.
